It was deja vu for the Falcons as they start the season the way it ended last year. A last second pass to Julio Jones falling incomplete in a gut wrenching loss to the Eagles in Philadelphia. The final score this time was 18-12.
The Falcons led the game 12-10 with less the 5 mins to play. But the tired Falcons defense could not stop a suddenly potent Eagles ground game led Jay Ajayi who had 2 TDs including the game winner.
Atlanta’s all pro WR was the best player on the field for either team accounting for 180 of the Falcons 299 yards of offense.
The Falcons on offense don’t seem to have a sense of urgency. We saw it in the preseason and carried into tonight’s game. Everyone keeps giving this offense high praise for all the weapons it has. But it lacks a real identity. Unlike the Super Bowl season, the offense can’t impose it’s will on a opponent anymore. The defense however continues to carry they day as they have done since the 2nd half of last season. All the young core is a year older and wiser and 2nd year LB Duke Riley seems ready for a breakout year.
If Atlanta can’ get it’s offense in rhythm they are primed for a return trip to Super Bowl making history as the 1st team play in the game at home. If not we will say about the Falcons in the words of the late Coach Denny Green.. “They are what we thought they were”.
