Mercedes Benz stadium is a glorious new state of the art stadium considered to be one of the finest sports venues in the world. It annually hosts the SEC championship, and this year the College Football Championship two of the biggest events of the year for the sport. The Celebration Bowl is the 1st bowl game played each year. It’s the 125th anniversary of the 1st football game played in HBCU football history.  None of this seems to faze the players from Grambling State or No. Carolina A&T.

It’s the 2nd appearance for each in the game with Grambling State returning as defending champs, and No. Carolina A&T coming back after winning the the inaugural game in 2015. NC A&T also boasts a unblemished 11-0 record.

Check out the press conference the day before the big game in Atlanta. Players from both teams seemed relaxed but ready to play in this historic game.

In the #CelebrationBowl the cheers are about family as much as #football

16 Dec

As the hours are counted down before the 3rd annual Celebration Bowl the head coaches and players took time out to speak to the media in their final press conferences. The Celebration Bowl matches the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) champions in Atlanta to determine the kings of Black College football.

There were plenty of Q & A regarding team strategy, key player strengths, school pride and the like. What stood through the answers from the coaches of both teams was the importance of being a family.  It was wonderful to hear what that meant to coaches personally as well as for their teams.

#Atlanta loses to Cleveland at home 121-114. Are #Hawks – Loveable or Losers?

1 Dec

Another night of NBA basketball, another tough loss at Philips Arena by the Atlanta Hawks. This time it was to the Cleveland Cavaliers 121-114. (

This is a very frustrating team to watch. The team plays well in spurts, but can’t finish and close out games
The Hawks do not have a real clutch shooter, a go to guy
Late in games the team short arms shots and make costly mistakes in fundamental play. With bigs Dewayne Dedman, and Mike Muscala The team is even more undersized at Forward and Center. They have no consistent scorer at the wing positions small forward and 2 guard. Point Guard Dennis Schroder is a 20 pt per game type scorer, but often does not hit KEY shots in 4th quarter. Rookie John Collins is good but still a year or two away from being a star. This team is unable so far to play well for a full 48 minutes. Everyone keeps talking about how hard they play but a lot their energy is wasted. On offense mad dashes to the paint often end in missed layups. Players seem to be out of control or unable to find an open teammate to finish plays. Defensively they have active hands, ranking #4 in league with 9 steals per game. However they are a bad defensive team overall hovering near the bottom of the league in most categories They are #26 in opponents shooting percentage, #27 in points allowed, #28 in 3 pointers given up per game.
Players out often are out of position when ball is rotated by their opponents. Their close outs on 3 point are horrible. Defenders arrive late and often leave their feet way too early causing silly looking ‘fly bys’ missing the block, and puts them out of position for the rest of the play. Unfortunately unfocused energy is wasted energy.

It looks a lottery pick is coming sooner rather than later for Atlanta.  #Hawks2020 is still on schedule.

#YellowJackets QB play and speed key for a #CFAKickoff win

4 Sep

Georgia Tech finds themselves on their biggest stage since the 2014 Orange Bowl. In that game they also were up against a ranked SEC opponent. The Jackets were led by mercurial quarterback Justin Thomas. Thomas had one his best games a Tech uniform. He garnered MVP as he accounted for 4 TDs en route to a 49-34 Tech win.

This year there was no clear starter at QB even though Matthew Jordan was Thomas backup last year.  But after Jordan was injured the best option is last years 3rd stringer TaQuan Marshall, at 5’10 185 he is built and runs more like the elusive Thomas. Jordan at 6’2 and over 200 lbs was the better straight ahead runner, but look for Marshall to get some explosive plays before the night is done.

The other spot where Jackets have speed lurking is at running back.  As noted in the GT Football website local product  B-Back KirVonte Benson has outstanding speed. Qua Searcy at the A-back spot is always a threat on the jet sweep and dangerous as a receiver as well.

The Vols defense gave up over 200 yards per game rushing in 2016. Tech has averaged almost 260 yards and 5.5 per carry. If the Jackets can do that tonight thet ay have their 4th straight win over an SEC opponent. And we know how much Coach Paul Johnson would like that.

From the outside it looms proudly over the Westside landscape. A menacing 50 ft high Falcon (the largest steel sculpture in the Unite States) greets you at the main entrance. At night the huge Mercedes Benz logo illuminates the sky like a beacon. It lets all who approach know that they are in the conundrum of Sports in the South and possibly the US.

The inside is so surreal it’s as if you are walking into a giant video game. From veteran sportscasters to rookie reporters fresh on the job, all the media was amazed by what we saw. It’s going to be the talk of the town, and the Sports world for years to come.

Is #Washington WR #JohnRoss fastest ever at #NFLCombine ?

4 Mar

Step aside, Chris Johnson. Possibly. Washington receiver John Ross unofficially ran a 4.22-second 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine. If that number stands, it becomes the fastest 40 time in the history of the Indianapolis gathering of incoming prospects. Nine years ago, Johnson (who has played running back for the Titans, Jets, and Cardinals) cranked…

Then there were 6 – Penn State win helps keep #CFBplayoffs in chaos

4 Dec

Pic –

The #CFBplayoffs committee have a problem. There are six teams with compelling reasons, using THEIR criteria, to be part of playoff that consists of only four teams. Of those teams, Penn State looks to have the most compelling case to be in.

Penn State had only 1 reg season Big 10 loss, and won on the field the Big 10 championship arguably the best conference in football this year. Their Sagarin strength of schedule ranking is better than #3 Clemson or #4 Washington. They beat #2 Ohio State. They have won 9 straight games. These are all the things the committee says are reasons to be in the CFB playoffs. It would appear that Penn State should be in ahead of Washington, Clemson or Ohio State even though they have 2 losses and the rest have have 1.

The problem is that the Nittany Lions are not a exciting pick. They don’t have the media popularity and fan notoriety of Ohio State or Michigan. Plus their may be some lingering dislike of the program because of the past sex abuse/molestation scandal. This could impact revenue generated by the game which we believe is as important to those in charge than getting the champion that did best in competition on the field.

To find out more about the committee and the process click HERE to go to CFB playoffs page. We shall see how the committee proceeds in the process. Is it business at usual for behind the scene power brokers? Is more money the mission, or producing a true on the field champion. We shall soon find out.

Did Kirby and the #Dawgs get outsmarted by #GaTech ?

29 Nov

#GTvsUGA 2016 became an instant classic as the #YellowJackets knocked off the #Bulldogs 28-27 on a TD with just 30 seconds left in the game. Georgia seemed to have the game in hand with a 27-14 lead midway through the 4th quarter. But Tech stormed backed with 2 TDs, the last with 30 sec. left to snatch the win in front of over 90,000 stunned fans at UGA’s Sanford Stadium. The winning score by Ga Tech WR Qua Searcy was a the result of a trick play gone awry. The play had intended to be a toss by Searcy to QB Justin Thomas. However Searcy said when he saw he couldn’t get the ball to Thomas, he decided to run for it. That run turned into a 6 yd dash culminating in a spectacular leap from the 3 yard line, squeezing past 3 Georgia players into the end zone.

Many will question what happened to a Georgia team that had been so dominant through 3 quarters. The Bulldog defense gave up 170 of the 392 total yards the Jackets gained in the 4th quarter. Most of those passing. On offense Sony Michel who racked up 170 yards rushing for the game, only had 3 carries for 9 yards in the pivotal 4th period.

These stats, along with the interception thrown by QB Jacob Eason with less than 4 mins to go were stunning. It will leave UGA fans wondering about coach Kirby Smart and his staff’s game plan in the final quarter.

For Tech fans, they gleefully left Sanford Stadium with the Governor’s Cup and their 2nd straight victory at the home of their in state rivals. With many underclassmen returning for GT next year it seems that the future looks good down on the Flats.

With this type of competition between the 2 schools, this game will move up the ladder nationally as a must see rivalry game

Another crazy edition of #CleanOldFashionedHate is in the books.
