The destruction of a champion: Atlanta #Hawks go from contender to pretender

4 May

In the 2014-15 regular season, the Atlanta Hawks were one of the best teams in the NBA winning 60 games, and reaching the Eastern Conference finals for the 1st time in team history. So after such a great season you do what you can to shore up your holes and try again in 2016. Right? Wrong. The Hawks dismantled the team over the next 2 years. First Demarre Carroll gone to Toronto as a free agent after he claims Atlanta didn’t even make him an offer. Next Al Horford signed with Boston after negotiations were mishandled by Hawks brass. Jeff Teague traded to Indiana for a 1st round pick which became Taurean Prince. Kyle Korver to the Cavs for a 2nd rounder. (We will see over time how these picks pan out.) Since that time the team has been on steady decline each year. In 2016-7 they finished 43-39,  twice having 7 game losing streaks.

As much as I like the players, coaches, and team executives some hard questions have to asked and answered. Role players Kent Bazemore and Denis Schroder both were signed to big $70 mil plus contracts after teasing us all with some great play in the 2016 season. Denis has showed signs he was signed to

Dwight Howard is brought in as free agent, but in late in games is played sparingly.  First. Why you do bring a low post big man when the league has switched over to a outside shooters league? If you do bring him in why aren’t more plays run to take advantage of his FG shooting of over 60% ? Rebounding and scoring were all up from his last year.  Even his FT shooting was better. At first all went well. Atlanta used a 2 tier offense. Start games off by pounding ball inside to Dwight Howard, then bringing in the smaller 2nd unit to attack with slashing drives and outside shooting. It worked. They opened the 2016-7 season with a surprising 9-2 record and thoughts of a possible deep playoff run.

But as opponents adjusted, there seemed to be no real counter by the Hawks. The team’s hallmark became inconsistency.  Wins over top teams like Cleveland and San Antonio, Boston were offset by strange losses to bad teams like the Nets. Kent Bazemore, who signed to a huge contract before the season played worse than last year. Denis Schroder although improved still was a bit erratic and like Howard found himself on the bench during critical times of games.  During the last part of the season and playoffs key defender Thabo Sefolosha saw little or no minutes.

All of these things made you wonder is the team being run with winning being the No. 1 priority .  Unexplained benching of players, constant trade talk being leaked to the media all created a sense of disloyalty and dysfunction on the team.  It is up to management to put together a team,  coaches to create a scheme/plan to put the players in the best position to maximize their skill sets, and players to play with relentless effort and energy.

The Hawks need to have everyone stay in their lane and ‘do their job’ in order to be a winning franchise.

In order to be the champions, you had to beat the champions. Mission accomplished for Clemson. A historic rematch for the ages lived up to the hype thanks to a wild and career-defining fourth quarter that saw the Tigers win the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship Game in dramatic fashion 35-31 over Alabama. Same record, different feel for @GeorgiaTechFB

Backup Matthew Jordan takes the helm late in 1st half

The Yellow Jackets find themselves with a 2 – 0 record after their 1st 2 games of 2016. They started 2015 the same. Except last year the Jackets had 2 blowout wins over HBCU Alcorn State and a mediocre Tulane team. It seemed like a continuation of their magical 2014-15 season which ended win a win over 2 SEC schools: arch rival Univ. of Georgia, and Miss State in the Orange Bowl. As they prepared to take on Notre Dame in So. Bend it seemed the potential for even greater heights for the confident Yellow Jackets were there. Of course we all know what happened. A couple of big plays and injuries cost them against the Irish. Then the injuries mounted along with the losses and Tech would only win 1 more game. An unbelievable last minute win over ACC champ Florida State.

Now in 2016 the record is the same, but the feel is different. The Jackets and their fans begin 2016 with a more subdued and businesslike attitude. Game 1 vs BC in Ireland was a 17-14 thriller. QB Justin Thomas cemented his spot in the Ga Tech Sports Hall of Fame with incredible play including converting a miraculous 4th and 19 in the 4th qtr. Game 2 vs Mercer found GT in a close game early before pulling away to 35-10 win.

Injuries strike again as Thomas gets dinged in 1st half and did not play the rest of the way. But backup QBs nifty #2 Matthew Jordan, and speedy #3 TaQuon Marshall ran the offense without missing a beat. The playing time that Jordan and others got last year will surely play dividends throughout the year.

Now the Jackets prepare for 2 huge games in 11 days which will surely impact how far the boys from the ‘Flats’ will go this. This Sat the “Gold out’ game vs Vanderbilt of the SEC and Thur night, nationally televised game vs defending ACC champs Clemson. Both games are home at the friendly confines of Bobby Dodd stadium. Ga Tech is cautiously optimistic that they have a few  ‘Welcome To Atlanta’ moments that will make 2016 a season to remember.

#CardonPalmer and #LarryFitzgerald join #Manning in #SuperBowl of Old Men #AZvsCAR

Cam Newton has been the best in the NFL this year. But Cardinal vets QB Carson Palmer and WR Larry Fitzgerald know this could be their last opportunity to go to the Super Bowl. This may be just enough steam to get Arizona past the Panthers and into SB 50.

If they are able to join Denver Broncos Petyon Manning and Demarcus Ware, Super Bowl 50 will certainly be a place for old men.

Super Bowl 49: What the Seahawks must do to win

1 Feb

These are some of the keys to a Seattle victory over New England

1) Unleash the ‘Beast’ Marshawn Lynch is the fulcrum around which the Seahawks offense turns. Seattle must use all of Lynch’s skill sets. Not only using him to soften up the Patriots on the ground, but also take advantage of his great skills as a receiver.

2) Pressure Tom Brady The Seahawks ‘D’ must be able to rush Brady and keep him uncomfortable in the pocket. They must be able to do it with 4 rushers. It is the formula that the NY Giants used in their 2 SB wins over the Patriots

3) Let Russell be Russell He is UNDEFEATED against SB winning QBs. Russell Wilson seems to be unflappable when the pressure. His never say die attitude has helped secure last second wins in college and the NFL. His pass/run skills are unmatched in the league right. Let him be free to do what it takes to make plays

Russel vs Pats

If Seattle does these things they will win and stake their claim as the team of the decade so far.

The CFB Playoff Championship-Then there were 2: Ohio State vs Oregon

13 Jan

The big question for this game is can OSU Soph QB Cardale Jones keep pace with Oregon Heisman Winner Marcus Mariota? The answer to that question will go a long way to determine the winner to this game. We think Ohio State with  the running of Jones and RB Ezekiel Elliott will allow the Buckeyes to slow down the Ducks attack. For Oregon if they can rush the ball (over 300 yds against FSU)  they will be tough to beat. We’re picking The Ohio State Buckeyes in a close one 34-31

Colts Andrew Luck is outperforming Broncos Peyton Manning so far in the 1st half. Luck 16-24, 1 TD. 1 INT looking crisp, sharp. Manning misfiring on last 7 throws. Can Manning stage 2nd half comeback like Pat’s Brady?

Refs call goes other way for Cowboys. GB beats Dallas 26-21

Dez Bryant catch that wasn’t (FOX,Business Insider)

What comes around, goes around?

A controversial referee call goes against Cowboys to thwart a drive that could have given them a 4th quarter lead vs the Green Bay Packers. Dez Bryant made a catch that was then ruled a no catch. Once again TV broadcasters and viewers are left scratching their heads on a call that changed the outcome of the game. Although I am a Packer fan, another game affected by refs in a way that makes the NFL look more like WWE instead Pro Football.

Falcons vs Panthers-Two Teams with something to prove

NFC South title on the line. Both coaches on the hot seat. Especially the Falcons Mike Smith.

Who will step up and play big? For Atlanta QB Matt Ryan has proven to be a cool customer in the regular season engineering multiple 4th quarter comebacks. The Panthers Cam Newton returns to his native Atlanta playing similar to the way he did when he was an All Pro in 2011.

The keys to this game will be:

Which team can run the ball the best.

Who wins the turnover battle

We look for the Falcons to open the playbook. With Steven Jackson out, it leaves room for their small speedy backs Devonta Freeman and Jacquizz Rogers to use their speed and elusiveness to move the ball more on the ground and in the air. Both men are effective as receivers so Matt Ryan will look to strike anytime a 1 on 1 opportunity presents itself.

The Panthers running attack has averaged over 200 yards per game over its last 4 played. Also Cam Newton has once again become and integral part of the Carolina run attack/

To the winner goes the spoils…Stay tuned.
