#Falcons vs #Seahawks – No room for error in #NFLPlayoff chase

21 Nov

The 2017 Atlanta Falcons have played their way into a precarious position in their quest to return to the postseason.

Winnable games vs the Bills, Dolphins at home, and Panthers on the road have left them in 3rd place in the NFC South. Even after a big home win against a depleted Cowboys team, Atlanta needs to win 5 or 6 of their last 7 games to get back in the playoffs. The good news is all but 2 of those games are against teams that are ahead of them in the standings. The bad news is those teams are playing well.

The Falcons offense looked the best it has since the opening game vs Green Bay. 6 different players caught at least 2 passes from Matt Ryan who looked loose and confident even when forced out of the pocket. Atlanta even ran some hurry up offense a few times (finally)

Once again the Falcons opponent will be missing key players from their roster. All Pro defenders Cam Chancellor, Richard Sherman and Cliff Averil are all out due to injury.  The Falcons offense should be able to move the ball against Seattle IF they have the cohesiveness and execution of last Sunday.

On defense for the 3rd week in a row Atlanta has the challenge of stopping a dual threat QB. Against the Panthers the D had huge problems stopping Cam Newton. They fared much better against Dak Prescott and the Cowboys sacking him 8 times.  With Russell Wilson they face their stiffest challenge yet. Not only is he elusive but his ability to make big plays of a scramble is amazing

If the Falcons can contain Wilson and maintain their offensive efficiency from last week. Atlanta will have the same record they had after 10 games last year, 6-4.  They also will find themselves right back in the middle of the playoff hunt.

#Falcons pick of #TakkaristMcKinley – hubris or just following their hunches?

The  2017 NFL draft ‘needs list’ for the Falcons wasn’t too much different from 2015 or 2016. Get a good edge rusher, and shore up the offensive line with players who could play right away. In 2015 the pick was fairly obvious. Pundits and fans alike thought Vic Beasley the standout DE from Clemson had shown the speed and quickness to be a good NFL pass rusher.  Even though he was a bit undersized at only 235 pounds, Atlanta drafted him 6th overall.  He has become one of the NFL’s  best pass rushers , leading the league last year in sacks.

In 2016 however the Falcons started with picks that did not seem to address their needs at all.  1st round pick Keanu Neal was a SAFETY, not an edge rusher. 2nd round pick Deion Jones was fast but was a middle linebacker, and like Vic Beasley a little undersized.  Reaves turned out to be a ‘thumper’ who patrolled the Falcons back-end. and dished out punishment to opposing players at will. Deion was a tackling machine and rookie of the year finalist. Another slam dunk for the Falcons.

So here we are in 2017 and again Atlanta surprises us by picking outside linebacker Takkarist McKinley from UCLA.  McKinley appears to be another ‘DQ’ (Dan Quinn) guy. The All Pac 12 DE/OLB is described by NFL.com as “Relentless worker bee on the field” “…and is always charging towards the ball” However on the other side he is considered to be “raw” and a “little stiff in the lower body” He also is coming off shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum.  He was slotted by some to be a 2nd round pick. Why did the Falcons traded a 3rd round and 7th rounder to move from 25th to 31st pick to get him. In a draft which is supposed to be one of the deepest in history it seems they could have stayed put and still got him. 1st round picks should be impact players on your team right away. The fact the Falcons selected a raw, injured, player with big potential, means  Falcons leadership is convinced they have the coaching system and team culture that allows them to get the most from the players they bring on board.

The rest of the Falcons draft has yet to unfold. But if McKinley plays the way last year’s draft group did, the Falcons could back in the Super Bowl again and got another rising star in Takkarist McKinley press conference bad language notwithstanding.

GT Mens Basketball starts Pastner era in ACC with upset of No.5 #UNC

1 Jan

@GTMBB stuns 9th ranked #UNC 75-63 to start the @GTJoshPastner era with huge #ACC win.

Josh Pastner arrived on the Ga Tech campus in Atlanta to mixed reviews. Some who followed his career at Memphis felt his teams under performed while he was there. Many here in Atlanta however felt the young former Arizona star would bring the energy and youth needed to help revitalize the once storied basketball program.

If the first half of the season is an indicator, the Yellow Jackets may have found their man.  The GT men are 9-4, 1-0 in the ACC after their New Year’s Eve victory over the Tar Heels.  Josh Okogie lead the way with 26 points, and bruising big man Ben Lammers posted a double double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Josh Heath and Quentin Jackson also were in double figures with 15 and 11 points respectively.

Did Kirby and the #Dawgs get outsmarted by #GaTech ?

29 Nov

#GTvsUGA 2016 became an instant classic as the #YellowJackets knocked off the #Bulldogs 28-27 on a TD with just 30 seconds left in the game. Georgia seemed to have the game in hand with a 27-14 lead midway through the 4th quarter. But Tech stormed backed with 2 TDs, the last with 30 sec. left to snatch the win in front of over 90,000 stunned fans at UGA’s Sanford Stadium. The winning score by Ga Tech WR Qua Searcy was a the result of a trick play gone awry. The play had intended to be a toss by Searcy to QB Justin Thomas. However Searcy said when he saw he couldn’t get the ball to Thomas, he decided to run for it. That run turned into a 6 yd dash culminating in a spectacular leap from the 3 yard line, squeezing past 3 Georgia players into the end zone.

Many will question what happened to a Georgia team that had been so dominant through 3 quarters. The Bulldog defense gave up 170 of the 392 total yards the Jackets gained in the 4th quarter. Most of those passing. On offense Sony Michel who racked up 170 yards rushing for the game, only had 3 carries for 9 yards in the pivotal 4th period.

These stats, along with the interception thrown by QB Jacob Eason with less than 4 mins to go were stunning. It will leave UGA fans wondering about coach Kirby Smart and his staff’s game plan in the final quarter.

For Tech fans, they gleefully left Sanford Stadium with the Governor’s Cup and their 2nd straight victory at the home of their in state rivals. With many underclassmen returning for GT next year it seems that the future looks good down on the Flats.

With this type of competition between the 2 schools, this game will move up the ladder nationally as a must see rivalry game

Another crazy edition of #CleanOldFashionedHate is in the books.

Fantastic finish in The Flats Ga Tech upsets FSU 22-16 on blocked field goal #GTvsFSU

25 Oct

It must have been the Full moon. On a beautiful, breezy fall night the stars finally aligned for the Yellow Jackets. After battling the #9 Seminoles dead even for 59.8 minutes, it seem like all world FSU kicker Roberto Aguayo was going to nail a 56 yard FG at the end of the game sending Tech to another crushing defeat. They had lost to Pitt the same way the week before. But tonight it was different. Tech blocked the kick, and sophomore DB  Lance Austin returned it for a 78 yard game winning TD. Here’s a link to video of the play

Cris Carter apologizes for 14-month old video

24 Aug

Not a good look for Mr. Carter. Interesting though the timing. Why did it take 14 months for this to come out? The NFL, and possibly ESPN knew about this (since it was on the NFL website all this time. Click on link below to read blog by Pro Football Talk from nbcsports.com

Why #Warriors wont lose Game 4 of the #NBAFinals

12 Jun

The Golden State Warriors won’t lose Game 4 of the Finals because:

  • History-The Warriors have not lost 3 games in a row ALL year. After 2 game loss streak they win next game by avg of 13 points. They came back from 2-1 vs a Memphis team who played a similar physical style that worked temporarily in that series
  • Fatigue- Cavs have exerted extraordinary energy and even sustained some injuries. They may not the stamina to pull it  out
  • David Lee – The former All Star is back in Steve Kerr’s rotation. His scoring and rebounding over more minutes will make a difference
  • Steph Curry- The league MVP seemed to find his stroke during the furious comeback in game 3. He and Thompson are poised for big games

Hedging our bets. But one thing is sure. This has been one the best  #NBAPlayoffs in some time

Could David Lee @DLee042 be key to #WARIORSvCAVS #NBAFinals series?

10 Jun

David Lee is 6’9″ and 249 lbs. From 2009 – 2014 he averaged more than 18 points and 9 rebounds per game. Although not used much in these 2015 playoffs he is a proven, Top quality player at the C/F position.

He may be the antidote to Cleveland’s big men in the paint. Or will Steve Kerr, coach of the yr runner up, be out maneuvered by Lebron James like Coach Bud of Atlanta was?

GT vs UGAAlthough the Mizzou win over Arkansas eliminates UGA from playoff contention or a Jan 1st Bowl , Bulldogs vs Yellow Jackets will be must see TV in College football today. The Jackets are relevant Nationally for the first time since their ’09 Orange Bowl appearance. And if they can win big over the Bulldogs today, then beat FSU in the ACC championship, GT could slip into the CFB Playoffs. Looks like ESPN knew GT had a chance.
