#Falcons vs #Seahawks – No room for error in #NFLPlayoff chase

21 Nov

The 2017 Atlanta Falcons have played their way into a precarious position in their quest to return to the postseason.

Winnable games vs the Bills, Dolphins at home, and Panthers on the road have left them in 3rd place in the NFC South. Even after a big home win against a depleted Cowboys team, Atlanta needs to win 5 or 6 of their last 7 games to get back in the playoffs. The good news is all but 2 of those games are against teams that are ahead of them in the standings. The bad news is those teams are playing well.

The Falcons offense looked the best it has since the opening game vs Green Bay. 6 different players caught at least 2 passes from Matt Ryan who looked loose and confident even when forced out of the pocket. Atlanta even ran some hurry up offense a few times (finally)

Once again the Falcons opponent will be missing key players from their roster. All Pro defenders Cam Chancellor, Richard Sherman and Cliff Averil are all out due to injury.  The Falcons offense should be able to move the ball against Seattle IF they have the cohesiveness and execution of last Sunday.

On defense for the 3rd week in a row Atlanta has the challenge of stopping a dual threat QB. Against the Panthers the D had huge problems stopping Cam Newton. They fared much better against Dak Prescott and the Cowboys sacking him 8 times.  With Russell Wilson they face their stiffest challenge yet. Not only is he elusive but his ability to make big plays of a scramble is amazing

If the Falcons can contain Wilson and maintain their offensive efficiency from last week. Atlanta will have the same record they had after 10 games last year, 6-4.  They also will find themselves right back in the middle of the playoff hunt.

Is @AtlantaFalcons Matt Ryan a future Hall of Famer?

22 Aug

Is Matt Ryan QB of the Atlanta Falcons a future Hall of Fame player? Many people both in and out of Atlanta are either #SMH or #ROTFL after reading this statement. But is it that far fetched? One Super Bowl winning season would make him a candidate at the very least. Here’s why.

  1. Impact on the teams you played on. Did you make them better and/or were an invaluable part of your teams overall success.-  For Ryan the answer is an overwhelming yes. When Matt Ryan arrived in Atlanta as the #3 overall pick in 2007 the franchise was in disarray after the Mike Vick situations. He stepped in as the starter won and led the Falcons to the playoffs. He then became the first Falcons QB to lead Atlanta to back to back winning seasons. He also has been durable missing only 2 games thus far
  2. Post season appearances -He has led Atlanta to the postseason 5 of his 1st 9 years, including 4 times in 5 years from 2008-2012. In his 2 NFC Championship games he has thrown for almost 400 yards in each one (392 in ’12, 396 in ’17)
  3. Personal awards –  Pro Bowl 4X, All Pro – 1X, NFL MVP – 1X,  2008 Offensive Rookie of the Year
  4. Overall Stats and Performance rank vs his peers – Top 5 among active QBs in Avg yards per game, Avg, Comp % per year. He is in the Top 10 in virtually every other measurable passing statistic among active players

A franchise changing career, league MVP, Super Bowl winner, and ranked  among the best statistically at his position during his playing days. Sounds like a pretty worthy resume…if the Super Bowl ring is won.

#Falcons desire to stay aggressive may have cost them 1st #SuperBowl win

7 Feb

Throughout the 2016-17 season Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn’s main theme was that the team would play fast and be aggressive. For the first two and half quarters of Super Bowl 51 it worked to perfection. The upstart Falcons defense sacked Patriots QB Tom Brady and harassed into throwing his 1st playoffs ‘pick 6’ interception. Rookie MLB Deion Jones caused a fumble which led to an Atlanta score. By midway throughout the 3rd quarter the Falcons had a seemingly insurmountable 28-3 lead. At this point the goal should be to use the runn take time off the clock and put points on the board when you have opportunity.

Instead the Falcons coaches continued to the throw the ball and blew two chances inside the Patriots 25 to get a least a field goal. Twice Matt Ryan was sacked. One of those sacks caused a fumble to set a Patriot score. The next a sack and penalty wrecked the other chance to score. If Atlanta had gotten points on either drive they would be Super Bowl champs. Instead they will be considered Sports historical chumps who blew the largest lead in Super Bowl history

Repost of good article by #JimFlorio of #PFT on @TBBuccaneers #JameisWinston

It’s rare that a single PFT Live interview results in three separate PFT posts. But Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston is proving to be a rare commodity in the NFL — a natural, authentic leader of grown men. Among other things, I asked Winston about the letter he distributed to teammates before the signature win over…

Can #Falcons #LegionOfZoom stop the #Seahawks and #RussellWilson ? #ATLvsSEA

Can #Falcons #LegionOfZoom stop the #Seahawks and #RussellWilson ? #ATLvsSEA

@AtlantaFalcons ‘D’ now has a name -The #LegionOfZoom . Coined by (@RealMattlanta )Matt Chernoff  of (@680_The_Fan) this morning. This fits the way speedy young Atlanta defenders flew to the ball last week vs Denver last week. This quicker defense setup was needed due to multiple injuries at the LB position. It used SS-Kemal Ishmael (@B4_Kemal)  as a LB,  and had rookie S Keanu Neal (@Keanu_Neal) play close to the line of scrimmage. OLB Vic Beasley was moved around the field more often.. Lined up as DE on some plays. Pass rushed from the inside on stunt moves. Dropped back into coverage at other times. This allowed the ‘DirtyBirds’ to record 6 sacks, 3.5 of them coming from Beasley.

Even when their LB corp is at full strength the Falcons should play more of this quicker nickel package. The numbers and result from last week don’t lie

The #LegionOfZoom  will be needed today vs Seattle led by Pro Bowl QB Russell Wilson (@DangeRussWilson) Although battling injuries, Wilson has shown he is still a dangerous weapon for the Seahawks. Last week he through for 309 yds, and 3 TDs in site on not being 100 percent.

It seems like the Falcons may have started something. The evolution has begun, and it will be televised.

Big day by #Beasley leads way as #Falcons corral #Broncos 23-16

When the Falcons drafted Clemson’s Vic Beasley #6 overall in the 2015 NFL they felt they had someone who would finally give them a legitimate pass rusher of the edge. This was something not present since the departure of John Abraham a few years ago. In his 1st season however Beasley had very little impact. He tallied only 4 sacks 2 of them coming in game 15 vs the Panthers. Some of this was due an injury the severity not publicly disclosed until after the season.  2016 seemed to be going the same way. Beasley was constantly stymied by bigger lineman from the teams Atlanta faced. That all changed in Denver.

Check out our Vic Beasley interview

The 2nd year player who been moved to linebacker, finally became the game disruptor the Falcons thought they were getting when they picked him. Beasley had an epic game. He lead the team with 7 tackles, forced 2 fumbles, and most important tallied 3.5 sacks as Atlanta beat the Denver Broncos 23-16. Now people will point out Denver played rookie QB Paxton Lynch, and an injured lineman. But Beasley was in the Broncos backfield all day long making plays.  The difference was intensity, placement, and technique. The young LB was unrelenting in his pursuit of the ball carrier on run and pass plays when on the field. As we have advocated for repeatedly, he was moved around. First set up on the edge to rush the QB. Then in the middle on a stunt to create pressure from the middle. Next faking the rush and dropping back into coverage. He used his hands and arms more to create leverage and keep lineman from getting in to his body to block him. All told the Falcons defense registered 6 sacks on the day including the final one by Beasley’s former Clemson teammate Grady Jarrett. Next up is the team the Falcons are trying to model their defense on, the Seattle Seahawks

Ryan silences critics with record 500 yard passing performance

3 Oct

falcons-vs-panthers-2016-10-02-194

Matt Ryan has heard the grumbling from fans and the press after last seasons 2nd half collapse. The red zone interceptions. Clear discomfort in Kyle Shanahan’s new offense. The clutch QB play that earned him the nickname ‘Matty Ice’ had been replaced by a hesitant error prone imitation of himself. During his limited work in the 2016 preseason he didn’t look much better.

Ryan stoically handled the criticism as the professional he is and waited to the regular season to unleash the new Matt  Ryan aka  ‘Matticulous’. Ryan has been unstoppable for the 1st quarter of the new season putting up numbers that lead the NFL. He won player of the month for Sept. That was followed up by throwing for a Falcon record 503 yard, 4 TD performance vs the Panthers. He easily won the duel with reigning league MVP Cam Newton who was actually knocked out of the game with a big hit by Deion Jones.

He has been utilizing the many weapons he has at his disposal connecting with 8 or more players in each of the last 2 games. But in yesterday’s game the main thrust of the aerial assault came by ‘Jet’. Julio ‘Jet’ Jones had a career best 300 yards receiving on just 12 receptions. A stunning 25 yards per catch. His last one was a breathtaking  grasp and dash 75 yard TD which sent the Dome into a frenzy. It marked the 1st time in NFL history that a QB threw for 500 or more yards, and a receiver had 300 yards receiving in the same game.

The Falcons offense after 4 games lead the league in scoring, passing yards, and total yards. Ryan also leads QBs in passing, is on a pace to throw for over 5,500 yards and 44 TDs. Of course the season is young, and the NFL unpredictable. But for now Matt Ryan and Falcons can sing to the naysayers – “Turn down for what”

#RiseUp #AtlantaFalcons sign Rex Grossman Coach Dan Quinn announces today

26 Aug

Dan Quinn Falcons Head Coach

Atlanta Falcon head coach Dan Quinn makes it official today announcing that Rex Grossman has been signed by the team. Citing his quick release and veteran presence as he spoke to the local media at Falcons camp earlier today. (Click HERE to view announcement)

Falcons back up QBs have not done as well as hoped, especially hometown hero T.J. Yates. Yates who grew up in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta, GA was thought to be right pick to back up starter Matt Ryan. However he has been ineffective in his 2 preseason stints causing the Falcons to search for veteran help.

Grossman is familiar with the Falcons offense since his last regular season appearance came with the Redskins while Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan was in the same role in DC

NFL Playoff Profile: Patriots and Seahawks-Confirming greatness/Establishing Your Legacy

18 Jan

           Seahawk Logo Patriot Logo

Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots- The Favorites

Each of the teams have of course the desire to advance the Super Bowl and win. This is the goal for ALL 32 NFL teams at the beginning of each season. But for these remaining 4 teams there are additional currents underneath for the team and their QBs. For the Patriots and Tom Brady it’s about joining the ranks of teams and QBs considered G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time) If the Pats win vs the Colts they will play in their 6th Super Bowl in in the last 14 years and be AFC Champions for the 8th time in that same time period. Tom Brady would be making a record 6th start as QB in the game and win would tie him with Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw as the only QB to win 4 Super Bowls.

A Seahawk win would create an opportunity to become the 1st team since the ’03-4 Patriots to repeat as champions Also Russell Wilson would continue his streak of wins over SB winning QBs and establish himself as an elite QB in the League

As posted by Darin Gantt in PFT by NBC blog. Broncos head coach John Fox has decided to leave the Broncos after 4 years. The post was based on reports from Jay Glazer of Fox Sports who indicated the parting was mutual. Speculation is that it may have to do with status of QB Peyton Manning playing next year. Could Fox’s next stop be Atlanta? Or will the coach hang it up considering he did have a heart attack last year? Stay tuned #Broncos #JohnFox #PeytonManning #Fox Sports #NFL
